Improving the health and well-being of people with learning disabilities

This week is Learning Disability Week (17 to 23 June) and the focus of the week is Sport & Inclusion – but did you know that people with disabilities are nearly twice as likely to be inactive?*
A survey of 18-35 year olds with learning difficulties by Mencap ** also revealed that:
49% would like to spend more time outside their house
18% feel alone and cut off from other people
1 in 3 spend less than 1 hour outside their homes on a typical Saturday.
We want to change these statistics as sport and physical activity can reduce loneliness and isolation. The benefits for people with and without a learning disability include improved health and wellbeing, empowerment and greater social inclusion.
Our ethos at team BEDS&LUTON is that there are:
- No Limits to an individual's capacity to be involved in sport.
- No Limits to an individual's aspiration to succeed and keep fit.
- No Limits to regular sports participation.
Our Mission is to work in partnership to support, develop and promote safe, high quality and inclusive opportunities for people to participate in sport and physical activity for life.
We work with local partners to provide sport and fitness activities across Bedfordshire for people with disabilities and special needs.
