Thursday 5th October saw the first wheelchair basketball session take place at the University of Bedfordshire since teaming up with Bedford Thunder Basketball Club and ourselves, No Limits, to open the sessions to the local community, in addition to staff and students. The sessions are part of the University's participation programme Get Active so students and staff can attend for free as part of their membership and this is opened up to the wider community to try using the universities facilities.
The first session welcomed 10 participants with almost all of them being beginners in wheelchair basketball.
We were joined by 2 members of Aces Wheelchair Basketball Club in Aylesbury who have played wheelchair basketball at an international level. Craig Winspear competed for Great Britain in the Invictus Games in 2016 and 2017. Jonny Holloway has represented Great Britain at the Warrior Games 2017 as part of the GB Warriors team.
The session was coached by Luke Joines and Dom La Mura, both third year BA (Hons) Sport and Physical Education students at the University of Bedfordshire. They have both recently completed their Grade 2 Wheelchair Basketball Coaching course and were excited to coach the new sessions. Dom said the session was 'a lot of fun'.
"Seeing the participants smile and laugh throughout the session as they learn the game made it even more rewarding."
Luke, who also coaches the able bodied Get Active basketball sessions, said "last night was a good turnout for the first session. We went through basic fundamentals of operating the chair along with basics of basketball to introduce everyone to the game."
Alison Wright, our Sports Project Officer for No Limits, has been a great help in supporting and launching the new community sessions.
"As the county's inclusive sports programme, No Limits is delighted to have worked in partnership with University of Bedfordshire and Bedford Thunder to develop the Wheelchair Basketball Club. Creating more, local opportunities for disabled people to access quality sport across Bedfordshire is a key priority for our programme."
Wheelchair basketball sessions take place every Thursday 6pm-8pm in Polhill Arena on the Bedford campus, MK41 9EA. They are open to everyone 18+ males and females, able bodied and disabled, regardless of experience. Basic multisport chairs are provided but if you have your own sports chair, feel free to bring it along. Your first session is free and £3 per session thereafter.
